Our Crazy Road Trip: Day 7

Departure Time: 11-ish am
Destination: Yellowstone National Park
Miles Travelled Today: 144 by SuperRover

We hit the wildlife jackpot today! Bison, bull elk, mule deer, osprey, wolves, trumpeter swans, mallard ducks, and a teeny tiny squirrel all came out to play during our adventure in Yellowstone Park. No bears yet though, maybe tomorrow. God’s wondrous creation was everywhere to be seen, and all our poor kiddos wanted to do was to play in some snow. We did do that, but not before we saw Old Faithful erupt (I’m sure it would have been more impressive on a clear day) and drove a little out of the way to see Yellowstone Lake frozen over. We spent a total of about 8 hours exploring the park today. It was just so awesome to see how geologically extreme this place is. The ground is covered with, in some places, several feet of hard packed snow. And, interspersed throughout the park are hundreds of hydrothermal areas, bubbling and steaming like witches cauldrons. It’s actually a little bit spooky. The best part by far was the upper and lower falls of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. They were our last two stops before leaving the park, and they were well worth delaying dinner for. Maddie says that they were her favorite part of the day, along with tackling Daddo in the snow. Fiona cites her favorite part of the day as drinking chocolate milk. Sounds about right to me!

Cute sidenote: As we were driving through town on the way to the park entrance, Madeline very shrewdly remarked, “It’s not Christmastime here, is it.”

Thankfully, we did not have to wait too long for Old Faithful to blow - maybe 15 or 20 minutes. The girls were way more interested in making a snowman and getting lunch than sitting around staring at a steaming hole in the ground.

Kind of hard to see with all of the clouds, but thar she blows.

Gibbon Falls - A group of four college girls from Iowa was stopped here at the same time we were. One of them was walking along the top of the rock retaining wall, teetering several hundred feet above the canyon below. I so wanted to go tell her to get down before she fell to her death. I refrained.

" All of this beautiful scenery has grown tiresome. We must sleep."

Finally, playing in the snow!

The earth is the LORD's and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters.
